Sarjeant Quarterly Publication Design
Project Brief
A publication design project for the Sarjeant Quarterly, balancing imagery, essays, and event listings within a typographic system.
The Sarjeant Quarterly is a publication by the Sarjeant Gallery in Whanganui, released four times a year to inform subscribers about current and upcoming exhibitions. This project focused on designing selected pages for one volume of the Quarterly, using existing content as a reference.
Project Goal
Grid System
Structured layouts for essays and artworks
Each spread follows a consistent modular grid, creating visual balance and rhythm across the publication.
Typographic Hierarchy
Managing complex layers of information
Text styles differentiate essays, captions, and event listings while maintaining overall cohesion.
Cover Design
Exploring balance between type and image
Multiple iterations were developed to refine composition and visual tone, ensuring alignment with the gallery’s identity.
Cover Page Iterations
The cover defines each Sarjeant Quarterly issue’s visual identity — setting the tone and reflecting the gallery’s artistic spirit. Exploring multiple iterations helped refine how image composition, typography, and color could best represent the volume while staying true to the publication’s heritage.
